Why
Depression is one of the most common diseases, a leading cause of suicide and a major burden on society. For many patients, current medications work only partially, often take weeks to act and are not always well tolerated. This is a real innovation gap.
Approach
The team led by Prof. Claus Normann has identified a new class of compounds that targets glutamate-activated receptors on inhibitory interneurons in the brain. The focus is on a small-molecule candidate designed to act quickly with fewer side effects.
Path to patients
Development is funded by the GO-Bio initial programme of the German Federal Ministry of Research. Next steps include preclinical efficacy and safety studies, formulation development, regulatory preparation for clinical development and a planned spin-off.
